COVID-19 Update: Moving Forward at Bay State College

March 24, 2020

First, I want to thank you all for responding with grace, dignity, and even humor as we all come to grips with the emergency here in the Commonwealth. Your faculty members are diligently making certain that you learn well from a distance. The staff is attempting to respond promptly from their homes, and we are all getting adjusted to a new way of living for the time being. After Governor Baker's declaration yesterday, faculty, staff, board members, and administration got together (at a distance of course) to determine how the college should move forward.

While the situation is in flux and while we all hope for a quick end to the COVID-19 precautions, we believe that it is best that the college continue to operate at a distance for the remainder of the semester. You should know that we did not take this decision lightly, but thought it best to decide now so that students and staff alike know how to plan. We hope to return to normal quickly. Because our semester ends on May 8, we thought it prudent that we continue as we have until then, until the end of the semester.

Of course there will be more details to follow. You should know that your faculty advisors will be contacting you shortly to plan for summer and fall classes. We shall need to find a way to proctor final exams. I promise to keep in touch weekly (every Friday) with any further updates.

I know that we have all quickly adapted to this new world on the fly. We shall get through this and be stronger and smarter on the other side. In the meantime, we rely on the best science to guide our decisions and I hope that you can have the kind of discussions with your faculty that I had this morning. If you are feeling lonely, call upon a classmate with encouragement just to check in. If you are feeling distracted, find something new to ready (our librarian will surely have a recommendation or two). And by all means, be kind to one another. This shelter in place is bound to make us feel anxious, but it also affords us a moment to think and talk and examine things that we are often to busy to consider.

Thank you all for making us proud. We can't wait to see you all again sooner but in the meantime - study hard, keep your end goals in mind, and take a deep breath. We know it is difficult, but we shall all get through this together.
