Student Rights and Responsibilities

Bay State College complies with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA). FERPA is designed to protect the privacy of students' educational records by limiting what information may be released and to whom.

Students entering college need to begin a more active, independent and responsible role in their educational pursuits. Parents who are used to receiving regular, detailed reports from their students' elementary and secondary schools may find it difficult to adjust to not receiving those same reports at the college level.

If parents/guardians wish to receive student information concerning academic progress and other notices, it is necessary for the student to complete a Parental Release Form . This form may be downloaded directly or obtained from the Office of the Registrar .

We encourage students to communicate directly and honestly with parents/guardians. Please note that correspondences concerning academic and educational issues will be communicated directly to students, and, for the purposes of this Act (FERPA), Bay State College defines all students as independent. We still, however, encourage parents/guardians to contact this, or any, office on campus to discuss general policies, procedures or resources concerning your student's education or well-being. A more detailed explanation of FERPA (including exceptions to a student's independent status) can be found in the official College Catalog.
